Single Plank Dimension Chairs

I love chair design and wanted to build my own chair for a while. I was really inspired by Gerrit Rietveld’s crate chair but I wanted to modify the design slightly to only use a planks of a single dimension. That way, one could fabricate the same plank over and over and assemble a chair that way. Two designs were created, one with untreated pine planks for my house and a second made of stained and clear-coated planks as a wedding present to friends.

Chair Specifics

  • Pine planks from the hardware store (untreated and stained/clear coated)

  • Held together with wood screws

The planks were sized such that the long dimension was 4x the short dimension. That way 4 planks side by side (in the case of the seat and back) formed a square.
